Transition Your Wardrobe From Winter to Spring

This post is all about how you can transition into spring with ease and without buying a bunch of new clothes, or freezing to death on the days where the temperature still feels like winter.

A quick side note: If you purchased the closet cleanse course and haven't gotten started yet, this transition into spring is the perfect time to do it! It helps you not put away winter clothes that don't serve you only to pull them out and have to deal with them next winter, it also sets you up to feel amazing in your clothes and closet going into this spring and summer!

New seasons in general are a great time to clean out your closet, so if you need something to do this weekend, do this!

The answer is really simple when it comes to transitioning into spring, just swap out one winter thing for one spring thing, or simply add one spring thing! If you do one thing, just do this.

I have listed all my favourite ways to do this, and if you are interested in seeing it visually I highly recommend checkin out my spring Pinterest outfit inspiration board to get the ideas flowing for your wardrobe.

I really love the transition to spring because I prefer the blooming, discovery, and warmer weather this season holds. Here are all of the simple, fun, and very effective ways to start transitioning your wardrobe for spring that I love:

Wear Lighter Colours

This may be the simplest and most easy tip I tell people for transitioning between seasons. If you really don't know what to do just start with colours. In spring/summer you move into lighter and softer colours (obviously you can wear whatever you want in any season but if you don't know what to do this is a great place to start). In the fall/winter all you have to do is start wearing darker and deeper colours. I like to think of the actual seasons outside of clothes and how they look, and take inspiration from there. When it comes to spring blooming flowers come to my mind because I think about all the new growth coming in lots of fresh light pinks, yellows, oranges, and green, and with summer I think of clear blue skies and bright sunshine.

See what colours come to your mind when you think of each season and try incorporating those into your outfits.

Side note: as the great Miranda Priestly once said, "Florals for spring?.. Groundbreaking"

As overdone as it may seem florals are an amazing way to get into the spring season, they always are because every spring brings new flowers in our world, it naturally aligns with fashion. If you really don't know where to start this is always an easy way to add some spring into your outfits.

Light Layers

Start playing around with lighter layers or less! I love layering so if this is something you struggle with definitely book a consult call. To me layering is basically the art of playing around with your clothes to see what you can make work together.

Lots of things don't work together so don't worry about if you come up with some outfits that make you want to laugh, laugh about it, enjoy it. It's way more fun to try and get creative. I'm currently trying a new way of wearing my dresses which is wearing a mini dress with a large sweater over top and I am loving it, it is perfect for transitioning into spring. Getting into this playful space where you allow yourself to figure out new looks for your life is how you learn what does layer really well for you.

You can start with simply layering a sweater over a dress like I am currently doing, or play around with lighter jackets or kimonos. All you have to do is place one thing over top of another and see if you like it or not. (jean and leather jackets are classics that work really well for this).

Wear Lighter Materials

Instead of wearing heavy materials like bulky knits, velvet, suede, leather, heavy denim, tweed, or flannel, start wearing lighter pieces whether that is linen, cotton, more open knitwear, hemp, lyocell, etc. More natural materials tend to align well with the spring season.

Shorten the Length of One Piece

You can opt for cropped jeans or midi skirts instead of full length pants and maxi skirts, you can opt for shorter sleeves instead of long sleeves, you can go for midi or mini length dresses or rompers instead of jumpsuits or maxi dresses. You don't have to make every part shorter, just one part will do the trick. This one is really easy if you have a top that is more winter-y that you want to keep wearing, just switch out the pants for a skirt for something something shorter.

Remember, at the end of the day you can still wear whatever you want. If you like length in your clothes you don't have to make them shorter. I love maxi dresses for example, instead of cutting them out I just wear less layers with them or I follow the next tip.

Switch to Open Toed Shoes

You can jump into wearing sandals immediately (I love them, but sometimes the weather makes them feel out of place or it's still too cold), or you can start wearing more sneakers, flats, and heels instead of boots. Mules are a great middle ground between summer sandals and winter boots as well. Lighter colours will also help when it comes to shoes.

Add A Spring Accessory

Instead of wearing a scarf opt for a necklace, keep your maxi dresses but remove the tights and socks, and switch out your winter hats (toques if you are in Canada like me) for summer ones. Opt for a lighter coloured more relaxed bag. Start playing around with sunglasses, paint your nails a lighter colour,

Wear The Classics

Blue jeans, basic shirts, jean jackets, leather jackets, trench coats, lightweight cardigans, whatever you consider to be a classic that works well with pretty much anything can definitely be worn right now, and will make putting together outfits more effortless.

Re-think What You Own

We tend to box the things we already own into only being wearable in certain ways. Try thinking of new ways to wear the pieces you love, and see if you can create a whole new look you've never tried before. Only wear that sweater with jeans? Try wearing it over a dress instead. Only wear that slip dress in the summer? Try adding a long sleeve under it and pairing it with some statement accessories. You can also hop on Pinterest and simply search for that item, and then add "spring outfit ideas" behind it. Have fun with what you have, and let yourself be curious about what's possible with it.

Going forward in the future something I recommend to everyone I work with, is looking for versatility in what they are buying. It's okay if something only works for one season of the year, but ask yourself if you can make it work in multiple seasons, whether it's by layering it into other outfits or choosing colours that are great year round (or that you just like to wear year round).

Knowing you can create many different outfits for many different seasons makes that piece even more exciting to purchase. This also is a reminder of how important it is to know what you own and what you want, and also how important it is to let yourself be creative with your clothes.

Happy spring transitioning!
